after much research i decided to try it out
products i bought were Duplicolor fabric and vinyl paint, krylon plastic fusion paint, and blue engine enamel.
i highly recommend Duplicolor fabric and vinyl paint i have had nothing but good experiences with it any will use it for all interior work, krylon plastic paint is okay
i havent tried anything else yet so i dont know what would be better if you paint on a warm day then itll work fine but if it is less than 70 degrees youll have issues with it and it doesnt stay on very well in high traffic areas such as door seams and stuff
i used the engine enamel because no other paint has the blue i was looking for but it actually turned out great but you have to be paitent because you have to apply 5 really light coats an wait 30 minutes between each coat
i have yet to use it on my valve cover so ill let you know how that goes when i get it done
so what i did was strip the interior which was quite tricky ( give yourself at least 3 or 4 days of non stop hard work or a week to get it done)
the dash is tricky to get out i had to get my dad to help me pull it out after hunting down all the bolts holding it in it is a very big and awkward heavy piece
BE CARFUL NOT TO TEAR PULL OR BREAK ANYTHING
you do have to remove the ac tubes on the dash in order to remove the wires and unplug a lot of connections so take notes while working and label everything
once you get the dash and panels out you are ready to paint but make sure all your screws are labeled!
before you paint you need to clean all panels with dish soap and warm water and then let it air dray and repeat
if your doing any repairs on vinyl do your research and decide what technique you want to do but for my dash i used a sandable and paintable caulking material that worked pretty well i will post pics at end of article
use the caulking to fill in any cracks and smooth it
while the caulking stuff was drying i started painting
for the vinyl paint you dont really need to coat it i just sprayed it down till it looked nice and let it dry then applied another coat just because it dries quick an then i let it dry over night you will have to do a lot of taping off and prep work so buy a lot of painters tape
when your painting the doors you should take it apart to paint so label label label parts
any other pieces you just paint and dont require masking or disassembly
after letting all pieces sit over night its time to work on the dash again
any sandpaper will do but a fine grit will do better
start sanding down the parts you sealed with the caulking material until smooth and blow off all particles with shop vac or wipe them off with towel
when painting the dash be sure to apply 3 medium coats and then do touch ups for anything you missed i did not mask off dash but all vents were removed so nothing important was showing after letting it dry i started doing any touch ups that were necessary
let everything cure over night
when you think every thing is ready you can install just follow your notes and put everything back together
this is a great way to add some personality to you vehicle and make everything pop
total cost: about 60 bucks for paint, sandpaper and caulking
